When planning a city break, we all want to find things which take the hassle out of the holiday. So it's a great idea to look at some of the smartphone apps which will make your holiday a whole lot easier - and even more interesting. Here are some of our favourites:
This little gem will save you a lot of time and energy by gathering all your confirmation and reservation numbers, and compiling them into one simple itinerary on your phone. The Trip It app covers all kinds of reservations; so if you're on a city break to the capital you can have references for your London hotels, restaurants and theatre bookings all in one place. No more carrying bits of paper around, or trawling through your inbox for that lost e-confirmation! Best of all, it's completely free.
Free City Maps and Walks:
The Free City Maps and Walks app won't cost you a penny, and should help you avoid getting lost in a new city. The app features local maps available at your fingertips, as well as self-guided walking tours (complete with audio narration if you wish). There are over 470 cities covered, so whether you're staying at Berlin, Paris, New York or Manchester hotels you can put together a walking tour to suit your choice of local sights. Plus, the app doesn't require any 3G or internet connection to use, so you won't need to worry about the roaming bill if you use this abroad.

Add another dimension to your sightseeing with Wikitude, an "augmented reality" app which displays useful information about the locations and addresses you visit on your travels. Want to know more about that castle, or the skyscraper just over there? Point your phone's camera at it, and Wikitude will bring up user-generated facts and details to give you further insight into what you're looking at. This lets you find the information you need without carrying around a bulky guidebook.
On The Menu:
Wherever you go, dining out on holiday can sometimes be a little bewildering. With the On The Menu app you'll have access to more than 1,400 foodie terms from different countries around the world. Type in what you see on the menu, and get a simple explanation back. Very handy, whether you've opted for fine dining in a foreign restaurant, or are simply curious about the "crappit heid" on the specials boards in Edinburgh. (It's a tasty traditional fish dish, by the way.)
On The Menu App
Using a smartphone abroad can be incredibly useful - although it's important to check you're on the right roaming plan before you use them abroad! With the right apps you can leave all the guidebooks and sheets of paper at home, and get on with enjoying your break away. Have you found an app which has revolutionised your holidays?
