Zakynthos town is the capital city on the eastern part of Zante Island and built upon the ruins of the old town that was demolished by a devastating earthquake in 1953. The long waterfront extends in a semi circle between Solomos Square and the Church of Agios Dionysios, saint patron of the island, and is the most popular and crowded place in Zakynthos with many restaurants, large supermarkets, banks, tourist shops and ferry agencies. The remains of a Venetian fortress provide an astonishing view over Zakynthos Town and its surroundings and there are several museums including the Solomos, dedicated to the Greek poet Dionysos Solomos, the museum dedicated to the life and work of the Greek novelist and play writer Grigorios Xenopoulos and a museum of post-Byzantine art which stands on the Plateia Solomos.
