Once an ancient port, the thriving community of Alvor is today a popular holiday destination with a magnificent stretch of golden sand, a wide variety of watersports and a scattering of shops, bars and restaurants. The village itself has narrow streets and quaint little houses and the local fishermen still bring their daily catches into the little harbour to sell their fish at the waterfront market. There's also an aquapark.There are plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from in Alvor. The largest, sometimes known as Torralta, is the best equipped, sandy and backed by dunes. The other beaches in the vicinity, such as Praia Tres Irmaos and Prainha Beach, are also sandy but with huge rocks sporadically dotted along the stretch.
