Located on the Gulf of Aqaba on the southernmost tip of Jordan, Aqaba is the country’s only port city and gateway to the Red Sea. Voted the best Arab Tourism City in 2011, today it is a popular destination for international travellers and Jordanians to frequent.
Best known for its coastline and deep sea diving, there are around 25 different diving spots to choose from with clear, warm waters ideal for aquatic activities from snorkelling to scuba diving. Look out for the unusual archelia coral and tropical fish.
Those with a knack for history might consider visiting Aqaba Fort, dating back to the 14th century which was later renovated by the Mamluke sultan Qansawh el-Ghawri in the early 16th century. With ancient ruins from the Islamic era, Ayla is also worth stopping by with roots beginning from 622 AD. The city is also home to what is thought to be the oldest Christian church in history, which is thought to have been erected between the 3rd and 4th centuries.
