Aragon is one of Spain’s most ancient territories, originally a kingdom in its own right with its own laws and even language. Today it’s one of the country’s largest regions, dominated by the city of Zaragoza, where over half of its population lives. With a rich historical centre the city boasts the ‘Caesaraugusta route’, a trail leading visitors past an array of Roman architecture (a forum, baths and amphitheatre all feature), passing four museums along the way.
Journeying through time towards the present, the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Pilar is a Baroque style cathedral which features ceilings painted by Goya and Bayaeu, two of Spain’s most famous artists. Zaragoza also has good shopping opportunities, ranging from craft and souvenir shops to exclusive designer boutiques - not to mention several open air markets.
The far smaller Aragonian city of Huesca also plays host to Romanesque architecture, and acts as an entry point to the Pyrenees, where there is skiing, canyoning and mountaineering available to the intrepid visitor depending on the season.
