The once sleepy sugar-cane town of La Romana is located on the south eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, opposite Catalina Island, and about 60 miles east of San Domingo. La Romana hosts several magnificent resorts that provide everything needed for a perfect vacation. This area has the best golf in the Caribbean, sports and activities, luxury villas and accommodation, excellent restaurants and countless excursions by land or sea. Casa de Campo is thought to be the finest resort in the region, about 2 km east of the town, but there are dozens of choices to suite any style and taste. The white sand beaches include La Minitas, a small beach and lagoon that can be reached by golf cart or shuttle bus, and a beautiful crescent shaped beach at Bayahibe. A short 45-minute boat ride to Catalina Island gives divers the chance to see multi-coloured fluorescent fish, and the National Park of the East is another great diving area with various coral formations. Saona Island is exciting for wreck divers featuring the sunken St. Georges barge. Nearby attractions include the Altos de Chavon, a rebuilt Mediterranean style village of the 15th century with terra cotta brick buildings with shops, galleries and restaurants.
