Munich is the capital of Bavaria and is the third largest city in Germany. Known as München in German the meaning comes from the old German work Mönche which means Monks, this is becasue of the Monk on the city’s coat of arms. Munich is very close to Austria, Switzerland and Italy with the Alps just over an hour and a half drive away. In the city there are many attractions worth a visit including the Deutsches Museum and the many other museums and galleries, churches, opera houses and theatres. And you can’t travel to Munich without trying the local beer! Bavaria has a number of breweries that have to be tried and Munich is host to a number of beer festivals including the famous ‘Oktoberfest‘, but be warned the beer is strong at arond 8%!
