Situated on the northwest tip of Italy lies the region of Piedmont. Surrounded by the Alps, the province is famous for its wine and winter sports, so it’s no surprise that the capital of the area, Turin, played host to the Winter Olympic Games in 2006.
From grand piazzas to opera houses, palaces and art galleries, it’s obvious why Turin is the cultural centre of Piedmont as well as a major business hub. Today, you can visit the Palazzo Madama, a palace which was once home to 15th century royalty and French politicians during the Napoleonic era. Today it is occupied by the City Museum of Ancient Art, which is also worth a visit.
The culinary inclined should visit Langhe in the Cuneo province, which is notorious for its vineyards, producing internationally acclaimed red wines recognisable by their oak flavours and light colour. It’s also well-known for truffles, which are becoming an increasingly trendy ingredient prevalent in fine dining.
