San Jose del Cabo is a picturesque city of meandering streets and lush palm groves, with the languid pace of a Mexican colonial village. The area was first visited by Cortes in 1535 and served as a mission stop for centuries. San Jose has charming courtyard restaurants, small shops and boutiques, an increasingly popular historic art district, small hotels and a lovely tropical estuary, Estero San Jose. The atmosphere here is subdued compared to the nightlife-orientated town of Cabo San Lucas. Together the resort cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are known as "The Capes" or Los Cabos in Spanish. Between these two towns is The Corridor, the site of many of Cabo's uber-luxurious resorts and most of the golf courses, not to mention some of Baja's most beautiful beaches and coves. Los Cabos, including the East Cape and Todos Santos areas, continues to draw sportsmen who flock here for world-famous fishing, outstanding diving and surfing, world-class wind surfing, and game bird hunting.
