Sofia might not be one of the best known city break destinations, but that doesn’t mean that the capital of Bulgaria doesn’t have a lot to offer holidaymakers. The city is a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures with Ottoman mosques and Soviet monuments situated next to large shopping centres and modern nightclubs.
During the day explore some of the old churches, such as Boyana, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Alexander Nevski, with its distinctive domes. If you’re feeling fit, a climb up Vitosha Mountain is a must to admire the stunning scenery. During the winter this area becomes a popular skiing and snowboarding destination. After a day on the slopes many like to head to the Sofia Public Mineral Baths which are open all year round and the perfect way to soothe away those aches and pains.
The city really comes to life during the evening, with some of the best nightlife in Europe. Alternatively culture-seekers may want to catch a play at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre or an opera at one of the city’s ornate opera houses.
