Lake Garda is considered to be one of Italy's most beautiful lakes, on account of the contrast between dramatic mountains and sandy coves that surround it. The Mount Baldo mountain range to the east of the lake has peaks reaching 2,078m, the steep limestone slopes of which descend to the lake in a succession of pastures, woods, valleys, trees, olive groves vineyards and a few isolated villages. There are plenty of opportunities for extreme sporting activities as well as some gentle (or arduous) hiking. The lake itself is 30 miles long and up to 10 miles wide in places. You'll of course be able to sample some delicious fresh food and fine wine in the many restaurants around the lake, but the scenery alone will enchant you.
