George Formby used to joke that the most popular attraction in Wigan was Wigan Pier. This is an ironic joke as the so-called pier is actually a wooden overhang, where canal barges used to load cotton from the nearby mills.
The joke stops there though, as Wigan actually has plenty of attractions, not least the DW Stadium, which is the home of Wigan’s top two sports teams. Wigan Athletic play in the Premier League, whilst Wigan Warriors boast the accolade of being the most decorated Rugby League club anywhere in Europe.
Also worth a visit is Haigh Hall, a large country park, which boasts a historic stately home alongside two golf courses. The park has plenty for the little ones too, with a bouncy castle and inflatable slides. More about Wigan and its role in the Industrial Revolution can be discovered at the Museum of Wigan Life, whilst in the evening, the bowling alley and Empire cinema offer cheap, inexpensive fun for the whole family.
Wigan is less than an hour away from both Manchester and Liverpool, so is ideally placed to explore these two British cities. Hotels4U has a selection of hotels in Wigan available below:
